Portuguese Linguistic and Cultural Complexity:
A Multidisciplinary Journey
Joana Cortez-Smyth, Anabela Fernandes & Rui Abel Pereira (eds.)
University of Coimbra
This volume offers an in-depth exploration of Portuguese linguistic and cultural complexity through a multidisciplinary lens,
integrating historical, sociolinguistic, literary, and pedagogical perspectives. The introductory chapter provides a foundation
for foreign students and researchers by tracing the evolution of Portuguese from its Latin origins and detailing its
geographical expansion, emphasizing the language’s pluricentric character and distinct features. Subsequent chapters
expand the scope by analyzing the survival of minority languages such as Mirandese, the intricacies of Portuguese Sign
Language, and shifts in contemporary Portuguese fiction. The volume culminates with innovative methodological insights
via podcast- based language teaching, demonstrating the intersection between tradition and technological innovation.
Through critical synthesis of these diverse topics, the work highlights the interplay of language, identity, and
communication, affirming the rich tapestry of cultural and linguistic diversity within Portuguese-speaking communities. This
collection invites readers to engage critically with the challenges and opportunities that arise from historical roots, plural
identities, and the contemporary demands of language instruction. Overall, the volume aims to foster nuanced
understanding and scholarly engagement with the multifaceted nature of Portuguese language and culture in an
increasingly interconnected world.

Portuguese Pronunciation & Accents
Luciano Canepari
University of Venice
This book applies the principles of Natural Phonetics & Tonetics to describe the pronunciation of Portuguese, including
intonation, in a precise way never found in earlier treatises. It includes an introduction to the Natural Phonotonetics
Method, which can be used for any other language, as well (without the sadly known limitations of official IPA).
The vowels, consonants, structures, and intonation of Portuguese are fully described and transcribed, with many
examples of words, sentences, and conversations, in addition to the intonationally integrated IPA sample passage ‘The
North Wind and the Sun’.
Different types of Portuguese pronunciation are fully described (with clear phonic maps): international, neutral, traditional,
mediatic. In addition, the neutral, mediatic and broad pronunciations currently used in Brazil (16 koinés), Lusitania (12
koinés and some subdivisions), and Atlantic and Africa (adding Macau and East Timor, for 9 koinés) are extensively
treated.
Other chapters provide some foreign accents of Portuguese and 26 concise language phonopses and all orograms for
easier comparisons.
A mini-phono-dictionary contains more than 1000 words, mainly Names.

Exercícios de morfologia do português
Alexandra Soares Rodrigues
a semântica, a sintaxe e a fonologia.
This book contains exercises on Portuguese morphology. In these exercises we will focus on notions on the morpheme,
inflectional morphology, derivational morphology and word formation, in general, and on the relationships between
morphology, semantics, syntax and phonology.
The book consists of two parts. The first part consists of exercises; the second part consists of the resolution of those
exercises. The answers that are offered in the second part aim to explain not only the solution to the exercises, but also
the resolution of many doubts that students of morphology commonly have. Therefore, this volume should not be taken as
a simple exercise book, but as a manual that explains problems of morphology.
The volume also contains a list of current essential bibliography on morphology.
Alexandra Soares Rodrigues is Associated Professor at the Escola Superior de Educação of the Instituto Politécnico de
Bragança and researcher of the Centro de Estudos de Linguística Geral e Aplicada of the University of Coimbra.
